The nature of work in today’s ultra-fast-paced, tech-driven world bears little resemblance to that of 20 years - or even a decade - ago. Product life cycles are shorter, employee tenures continue to decline and AI is rapidly transforming how work gets done. Meanwhile, employers are still grappling with the debate over whether employees actually need to be “at work” to be working - and how return-to-office policies may risk the loss of talent.
Another thing that has changed dramatically is employee benefits. Simply put, today’s employees aren’t willing to accept yesterday’s benefits programs. From caregiving and mental health to GLP-1s and menopause, they want their employers to provide support and resources to carry them through every life stage and need. Employers are answering the demand for more expansive benefits offerings, adding more programs, vendors and point solutions.
Benefits are now one of the largest investments most companies make in their people. Yet, fewer than half (47%) of employees rate their overall wellbeing as high, while just 42% rate their financial wellbeing as high, according to the Alight 2025 Employee Mindset Study. These findings are especially concerning when you consider that poor health and disengagement cost U.S. employers $575 billion each year in lost productivity.
So, why are employers’ benefits investments failing to deliver on expectations - and how can they ensure their offerings are making a difference in the lives and wellbeing of employees and their families? The answer lies in combining advanced technology with human expertise to provide a smarter, more connected solution that ensures people have the support they need when it matters most.

From benefits complexity to clarity
Despite ongoing economic uncertainty and rising costs, nearly 80% of employers plan to maintain or increase benefits in 2026, a clear indicator they recognize the role of benefits in recruiting and retaining talent. Simply offering more benefits doesn’t always translate into better outcomes, however. In fact, they often create more complexity and confusion.
Leading organizations are leveraging AI-powered speed and precision with human expertise and empathy to reduce complexity, while delivering clarity, consistency and care at scale.
In the benefits world, AI plays three key roles:
- Clarifier: Leveraging AI for benefits management simplifies the process of selection, navigation and usage, reducing call center volumes and increasing employee appreciation of the investment their employer is making in them.
- Optimizer: By recognizing qualifying life events, like a new baby, health diagnosis or financial milestone, AI can proactively surface the benefits an employee needs in the moment, eliminating the time and frustration of having to search through dozens of programs.
- Enabler: Taking on mundane tasks like answering basic questions about plan terminology or eligibility rules, AI frees up service teams to bring empathy and personal experience to help people evaluate treatment options, understand financial implications or plan for major life events.
Enhancing the employee benefits experience
When employees understand their benefits and are supported in their use, they make better decisions. They use preventive care earlier, avoid unnecessary costs and spend less time trying to figure out the system. Among fully supported employees — those with integrated benefits and personalized support — 62% rate their overall wellbeing highly, compared to just 45% of those without full support, according to our 2025 Mindset Report. What’s more, fully supported employees are more productive, engaged and loyal to their employers.
Alight simplifies the complexity of today’s benefits landscape by architecting personalized, integrated benefits ecosystems. The Alight Worklife® platform combines AI, analytics and human expertise to connect health, wealth, leaves and point solutions into one experience that drives better outcomes for employees and employers.

The challenge isn’t just adopting new technology, it’s making sense of a growing web of benefits programs, point solutions and fragmented experiences. To succeed, employers must be keenly focused on transforming the benefits experience by leveraging AI to bring speed and clarity, while preserving the human touch to provide empathy, contextual judgment and trust.
