Challenge: Addressing financial strain and caregiving challenges through Long-Term Care planning

In 2023, the employer recognized a growing need to support their workforce with LTC planning as part of a broader financial wellness strategy. With personal care costs rising — averaging $127,750 annually for a private nursing home room and increasing 5% year over year —  employees were facing significant financial pressure.1 Traditional health insurance and Medicare typically do not cover these expenses, leaving many individuals vulnerable to out-of-pocket costs that can quickly deplete savings.

The employer was also concerned about the impact on employees who serve as family caregivers. With 1 in 5 employees acting as a caregiver, the emotional, physical and financial burden can be felt across a workforce.2 With 11,000 Americans turning 65 each day and the majority (56%) of them needing long-term care, the organization saw an urgent need to address the issue proactively.3

They wanted to provide meaningful support without overwhelming their HR team or creating confusion among employees. The challenge was to introduce LTC planning in a way that was accessible, empathetic and aligned with employees’ retirement goals.

Working with their broker, the employer focused on identifying a strategic partnership that would enable them to take a proactive, enrollment-based approach to financial wellness, addressing long-term care planning at a critical time.

Solutions: Delivering a streamlined, employee-centric enrollment experience

In early 2024, Alight began supporting enrollment for Chubb’s Lifetime Benefit Term with Long-Term Care coverage through Alight Worklife® (AWL) — a complex, compliance-heavy benefit. Initial results across seven mutual clients showed strong engagement, with an average enrollment rate of 7%.

Alight’s consistent messaging and internal advocacy helped keep this benefit top of mind during annual enrollment planning. The broker and Alight also worked together to bring forward a strong education campaign to educate employees on the value of this important benefit.

When this employer expressed interest in offering this coverage, Alight’s subject matter experts quickly collaborated with the broker and the employer to transition the benefit from a third-party platform to AWL. The selected carrier, Chubb, was part of Alight’s Strategic Carrier Partnership program, enabling seamless support for its administrative requirements.

Originally, the plan was set to be offered post-enrollment on an external site without customer care — posing challenges for employees and reducing visibility.

Alight’s team demonstrated how the benefit could be integrated into AWL, leveraging prior work with Chubb and the broker for both active and retiree populations. This led to a strategic shift to offer the plan directly through AWL, ensuring a more intuitive and accessible experience.

Throughout implementation, Alight and Chubb partnered closely with the broker and the employer to create a tailored communication strategy focused on simplicity and clarity, critical for explaining the nuances of whole life insurance compared to employer-provided coverage. Emphasis on a long-term care component resonated with employees who were planning for their families’ future.

The power of Chubb’s LifeTime Benefit Term with long-term care product led to high engagement and participation from the client. With partnership from Alight, the client on-boarding experience was seamless from implementation to ongoing billing administration. By consolidating elections within a single, trusted platform, and offering long-term care and life insurance together to highlight broader coverage needs, employees were empowered to make holistic benefits decisions.

As a result of Alight and Chubb’s partnership and process, the client saw substantially higher participation. On average, Alight and Chubb see 7.2% Lifetime Benefit Term and Long-Term Care participation across Alight platforms. This client garnered 19% participation.
